As with so many legends, only one thing seems certain in the story of the Pied Piper: in the Middle Ages, more than 130 children mysteriously disappeared from Hamelin, a town in Lower Saxony, Germany, on the river Weser. Today’s theories as to why and how they disappeared range from a plague, to a ruse out of revenge, to a small exodus to populate far-flung regions in eastern Europe, and even to seduction by the leader of a sect. Two hundred years ago, when the Brothers Grimm first published their now-classic collection of fairy tales, they related the story they had heard, as also documented in early manuscripts and depicted in the 1592 stained-glass window of Hamelin’s Market Church: In 1284, when rats had infested the small town, a gentleman dressed in ‘pied‘ clothing (made of differently-coloured fabric patches) led the pests into the river to the tune of his pipe....

With over 20 year's of experience in the market place:  What do we still hear about products from "Germany, Switzerland and Austria" .... They are always so expensive. Interesting after year's of listening and watching this as I either introduced clients to potential Canadian business partners or was selling to prominent buyers in Canada. Is it not odd that some of the most successful brands in Canada like Jura coffee machines, Miele washing machines , Mercedes or BMW, still seem to be doing well. Maybe the Canadian customer is not just looking for cheap but also quality and design from Europe!...

Great beer, food and leafy surroundings Summer is here and Germany's beer gardens are open for business! This 200-year-old Bavarian tradition has now spread to all parts of Germany. "According to the latest Quality Monitor survey of the German tourism industry, 60 per cent of international visitors come to Germany for the country's unique flair and atmosphere, and 93 per cent come for the traditional German food and drink", notes Petra Hedorfer, Chief Executive Officer of the German National Tourist Board (GNTB). Beer gardens have a long tradition in Germany Beer gardens are an important part of the Germany experience for holidaymakers. The roots of the beer garden tradition are to be found in Munich and the surrounding region. Around 200 years ago, breweries were only allowed to brew in the winter months for fire safety reasons. In order to keep the beer in drinkable condition until the summer, it had...

Creative Germany is the slogan for a new, young and creative side to Germany as a travel destination. "Germany is traditionally known as the country of poets and philosophers", says Petra Hedorfer, Chief Executive Officer of the German National Tourist Board (GNTB). But even now, people in our country are still setting trends every day, coming up with innovative ideas and pushing the boundaries of art. The famous 'Made in Germany' label has evolved into a 'Created in Germany' brand. De facto brand ambassadors include popular contemporary painters such as Neo Rauch, Bernhard Heisig, Werner Tübke and Wolfgang Mattheurer, all exponents of the Leipzig School who have made a name for themselves around the world. Germany has also become a magnet for international architects, designers and creators of fashion, and it's pulling in the visitors too. The latest Quality Monitor survey of the German tourism industry shows that 52 per cent...

Easter Traditions Make for a Lively March and Early April The Easter celebrations are among the oldest, most traditional and unique celebrations in Germany. A myriad of differing regional traditions, Easter markets and special celebrations start weeks before the four day Easter weekend from April 5 to April 9, 2012. Many of the North American Easter traditions, including egg decorating, Easter trees and Easter egg game and of course the chocolate Easter bunny were brought to North America by German immigrants. In preparation for Easter, towns decorate their fountains and trees with eggs and wind crepe paper around the branches. On the Easter Eve bonfires are lit celebrating the new and getting rid of the old. Easter markets throughout the country exhibit Easter eggs and spring-themed local arts and crafts in surroundings from historic cities, castles to landscape parks. The markets last either a few weeks or a weekend and are...
