200th anniversary of Richard Wagner's birth
The year 2013 marks the bicentenary of the birth of Richard Wagner, one of Germany's most famous composers and music dramatists. 2013 marks the bicentenary of his birth. The German National Tourist Board (GNTB) is using this anniversary as an opportunity to highlight a host of events in towns and cities associated with him. "Anniversaries of world famous composers such as Richard Wagner provide an excellent opportunity to promote Germany around the world as a land of music and culture," explained Petra Hedorfer, Chief Executive Officer of the GNTB. Germany is a popular travel destination for culturally minded visitors. The 2010/2011 Quality Monitor survey of the German tourism industry showed that 52 per cent of travellers from abroad chose Germany because of its art and cultural scene. Starring Canadian tenor Michael Schade, returns to COC stage after more than 20 years
Johann Strauss II’s popular operetta, Die Fledermaus, returns to the Canadian Opera Company after an absence of more than 20 years with a new production this fall. Strauss II outdid his own reputation as the “waltz king” of Vienna with Die Fledermaus by composing some of opera’s most enduring dance music for this hilarious comedy with its screwball plot of elaborate revenge, disguises and mistaken identity. A largely Canadian cast, led by internationally renowned tenor Michael Schade in a role debut, comes together in this new COC production by innovative director Christopher Alden with COC Music Director Johannes Debus conducting. Contemporary art again in Kassel
Toronto, 9 March 2012 – dOCUMENTA: a pivotal feature of the international art scene, a mirror on society and a showcase for contemporary art, dOCUMENTA in Kassel has rapidly become one of the world's foremost recurring exhibitions of its kind. It takes place this year for the 13th time. Held every five years and lasting for 100 days, it is also referred to as the 'museum of 100 days.'
