Opera to Go 2008

Everyday tales of passion and pathos…with just a touch of paranoia

Toronto, ON…Tapestry explores the passion and peril of contemporary relationships in Opera to Go 2008, presented in association with Harbourfront Centre’s World Stage 2008 at The Enwave Theatre (231 Queens Quay West). Opera to Go 2008 previews February 14 and runs February 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22 and 23, 2008. All performances begin at 8 pm with the exception of the February 17 matinee at 2 pm.

Opera to Go 2008 showcases seven world premieres of six 15-minute chamber operas and a Bravo!FACT film by composer-writer teams who have graduated from Tapestry’s Composer-Librettist Laboratory, an annual opera “boot camp” that brings together artists of various disciplines to collaborate on new opera creation.

This year an outstanding cross-section of Canadian writers and composers employ film, electronic music, shadow puppetry and live, large-scale puppetry to create works that push the boundaries of the operatic medium and truly reflect the world we live in. The program features She sees her lover in the light of morning by Leanna Brodie & Craig Galbraith in which a cautious PhD succumbs to unfettered romance. Brodie also partners with David Ogborn on The Translator, a disturbing story about a woman who, having witnessed atrocity, embeds herself within a nation’s turmoil. Peace of my Heart by Dave Carley & David Ogborn is a black comedy which unravels a twisted time on the operating table and during See Saw, by Anna Chatterton & Andrew Staniland, the end of a relationship raises plenty of uncertainty. A queen pursues an unlikely mate in The Colony, a quirky comedy by Lisa Codrington & Kevin Morse, and in The Shaman’s Tale, Krista Dalby & Kevin Morse take us on a mythic journey which ends in the ultimate sacrifice. The program also includes the screening of The Perfect Match, a Bravo!FACT film by Krista Dalby & New Zealand-based composer Anthony Young about a chance encounter that transforms two lives forever.

Opera to Go 2008 features the talents of soprano Carla Huhtanen, mezzo-soprano Jessica Lloyd, tenor Keith Klassen, and baritone Calvin Powell, accompanied by a chamber orchestra. The acclaimed creative team includes music director Wayne Strongman, director Tom Diamond, set and costume designer Julia Tribe, lighting designer Elizabeth Asselstine and stage manager Isolde Pleasants-Faulkner. Performances will be sung in English with English SurtitlesTM projected above the stage.

Tickets to Opera to Go 2008 are $25 (preview), $30 (advance), $40 (at door), and $20 (students & cultural workers). Tickets can be purchased through the Harbourfront Centre Box Office at 416-973-4000 or online at www.harbourfrontcentre.com. For more information visit www.tapestrynewopera.com.
