“German Zionism’s Confrontation with German Nationalism: The Case of Robert Weltsch”

Lecture by Dr. Stefan Vogt, visiting scholar at New York University’s Department of Hebrew and Judaic studies.

Dr. Stefan Vogt studied history, political science, sociology and German literature in Freiburg and Berlin. An expert on German intellectual and political history of the 19th and 20th centuries, he is particularly interested in histories of collective identities and political movements. His current project has to do with German Zionism’s confrontation with radical German nationalism.

This lecture is open to all interested individuals.

“The Neighbour’s Son”

Lecture by Liesel Appel, daughter of Hitler’s Minister of Education in Poland.

Liesel Appel was born in Klingenberg, Germany in 1941. When she could not reconcile her parents’ love for her with their hatred of Jews, she fled her painful past by leaving her native Germany. In her moving autobiography, ‘The Neighbour’s Son’, she writes of a lifetime spent coming to grips with Germany’s WWII legacy and of her unrelenting search for Edgar August Mayer, son of Willy and Faiga
Meyer, her neighbours in Germany. Ms. Appel has touched the lives of many people through her talks and lectures. In this presentation she will discuss her book, her personal journey and connection to Holocaust education.

This lecture is open to all interested individuals.

“Unveiled/ Fremde Haut”

The next film in CCGES' Film Series is Unveiled/Fremde Haut, a work which has been described as a moving meditation on identity, exile, prejudice, and survival which impresses with “atmospheric cinematography” and “powerful performances”.

Fariba, prosecuted in Iran because of her love of a woman, flees to Germany. When her application for asylum is turned down, she assumes the identity of a fellow asylum seeker who has committed suicide. In order to pay for forged documents, she takes an illegal job in a factory, where she meets Anne. While spending more and more time together, the women become dangerously close and Anne
begins to suspect Fariba’s true identity.

For Unveiled, director Angelina Maccarone received numerous awards including “Best Feature Film – Hessischer Filmpreis” 2005, “Jury Grand Prize” at the LGBT Festival Montréal 2005, the Jury Award “Best Narrative Feature” at Seattle L&G Film Festival 2005, and “Best Film” and “Best Direction” at the Cyprus Int. Film Festival 2006.

“Sun, Sex and Socialism? Cuba in the Films of East Germany's DEFA Studio


Lecture by Prof. Jennifer Hosek, Assistant Professor of German Studies at Queen’s University.

Prof. Jennifer Hosek studied Comparative Literature and German at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Berkley, in 2004. Her Research Focus was German culture post-1945 as refracted through Cuban culture post-1959. Other stations in her academic career included Berlin, Erlangen-Nürnberg, La Habana, Paris, Besançon and Munich. Between 2004 and 2006 she was a fellow in the Humanities at Stanford University.

Workshop: Combating Human Trafficking in Canada and Europe

There will be a panel of speakers from academia, public office and the media. The panel discussion will be followed by a keynote address by Patsy Sorenson from Payoke (European-based NGO combating trafficking). The event will also comprise a small art show and discussion hosted by Ms. Sorenson.

“A New Dynamic in EU-Canada-Relations”

Talk by German Ambassador Matthias Hoepfner

As the next guest in the Centre's Ambassador Speakers Series, we are pleased to welcome Ambassador Hoepfner, German Ambassador to Canada. Mr. Hoepfner is an experienced diplomat who, in addition to his posting in Canada, has served in Indonesia and Libya. From 1996 to 2006 he held important posts in the German Foreign Office, the last being Deputy Director General of the Department for Economic Affairs and Sustainable Development.
